Resilience, music, and preschoolers…

My research examines how active engagement with music effects the development of resilience in preschoolers.  I follow nearly 200  children and their families as they take part in music lessons each week.

I use a mixed measures design, which I think gives me the best of both worlds – and a really nice snapshot of what is happening.   I use surveys, psychometric measures of resilience, visual ethnography, and interviews.

I follow the children through their music classes and test them individually.  I talk to them, their parents, and their school teacher to try and capture as complete a picture of their developing resilience as possible.

I am specifically looking at three factors:  self-regulation, attachment, and initiative.

The first phase of data collection is all but complete.  Bring on the new year!
